Day School

News Update

Vocational Assessments – Monday 7th & Tuesday 8th July

All pupils will be taking part in Vocational Assessments on the following days:

Monday 7th July – Juniors, As & Bs.

Tuesday 8th July – Cs, Ds & Es.

The assessment will take place at The Novello Theatre, Sunninghill. All parents are warmly invited to come and watch the assessments. Parents stay for the duration of the assessments, which we expect to finish around 2.30pm. There will be a short lunch break. Pupils must bring a packed lunch and drink and are not permitted to leave the theatre.

Pupils must arrive at the theatre at 9.30am prompt. The assessments will begin at 10.00am. Coffee is available in the foyer for parents.

A list of uniform and requirements re props, music, hair etc will be issued to every child in due course.

Please note that the assessments are open to parents and staff only. Siblings, friends or other family members are not permitted.

Please note that pupils do not have to attend school on the day that they are not being assessed.

Dance Exam Coaching/After School Club

Many pupils are currently taking part in additional after school coaching sessions to prepare for forthcoming dance exams. Often siblings or pupils with whom they share lifts are asked to wait at school while these lessons are taking place. Since the dance teachers cannot be responsible for pupils who are waiting, they must go to the After School Club where they will be supervised. There is a charge of £2.50 for attending After School Club.

Lockers.

From September,  all pupils must have their own locker.

You will find enclosed details of our locker hire scheme.

Ballet Exams.

A letter has been sent home with all pupils who are taking ballet exams in October. This letter contains the dates of the exams and of the mock exams. Please make sure that you have received this letter.

Day School leavers

I know I'm who I am today because I knew you.

Our Day School leavers recently asked if they could give an assembly to mark their last day in school together. We had no idea what to expect. Redroofs does not give formal assemblies, but this was what the group wanted. It was as one might expect from the class of 2008, original, lively and worthwhile, and there were few dry eyes in the house by the end of the afternoon. They each wore the leavers sweatshirts they had had made, as did Mrs Cocksedge, our Academic Head who had been given one too as a parting present!

The presentation opened with a 3 part band, who forgot to turn the mic on, but continued all the same. Jo, our Headgirl read this:
Our class has probably been described as..the most "interesting", hyperactive and annoying class of Redroofs but also at the same time, the best! ...We've had our ups and downs but we have always come through it. We've been together through first loves, break ups, arguments, tears and tantrums. Everyone always said to us "Knuckle Down!" and "You're exams will be here soon." We didn't believe them at the time but look, here we are, on the other side of them now and moving on to new adventures.
It is very clear we're all going to miss Redroofs. We've been through so much it is really hard to say goodbye. We are all very lucky to have been here. One thing we can all say is, at Redroofs, you make friends for life.

To everyone else, enjoy your time here. It goes quickly. Just enjoy it. It was a real honour to be Head Girl at this school."

We were treated to a trio singing "For Good" from Wicked - I've heard it said that people come into our lives for a reason....And we are led to those who help us most to grow -if we let them, and we help them in return....I know I'm who I am today because I knew you....etc.
Comic moments as they pulled out memories from a hat, and Mrs Cocksedge in her Leavers sweatshirt, gave each a little insight into how they will be remembered.

The class presented some very personal gifts, and chocolates and flowers.
Through alot of tears, and emotional hugging, as would be expected of theatricals, their message came across loud and clear. Redroofs really isn't like any other school. They are now moving on, some to Dance Colleges, others to study for A Levels, others into our own college course, and we wish each and every one of them many more happy adventures. They have a great attitude and the confidence and adaptability to make the best of what is thrown at them and we really do hope they will come "home" often. You choose your friends, and some of us are also fortunate that we choose our family!

The afternoon drew to a close as Mrs Cocksedge and Miss Rose, on behalf of us all, wished them all the very best. I have a sneaking suspicion they may pop in to visit tomorrow!

Kate Winslet documentary brings camera crew to Redroofs
9:35am Tue 11th March :: Written by Sonia Kapur

Canadian documentary-makers have captured the talents of Redroofs Theatre School students on film as part of a profile on its most famous former student.

Production company A+E rolled into town last week as part of a programme being prepared on the stellar career of Kate Winslet.

Winslet, recognised as a genuine Hollywood A-lister after landing starring roles in blockbusters including Titanic, spent five years learning her trade at Redroofs.

While at the school in Bath Road, Maidenhead, the actress appeared on stage in Peter Pan and Adrian Mole, before going on to play Juliet Hulme in Heavenly Creatures.

Director of Redroofs, and Winslet's ex teacher, Carolyn Mayling said: "The children are delighted to be in the documentary.

"Knowing that Kate Winslet was a ex-pupil at Redroofs is really inspiring for them. The young girls often ask me 'was Kate actually in this room?'."

The documentary on Kate Winslet's life will be aired in Canada on completion, on channel CTV.
