Celebrity jungle hat helps Rosie’s charity

A JUNGLE hat worn by Reading-born TV actress Lucy Benjamin during her stint on I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here will be going up for auction on Sunday.

Lucy is a patron of Rosie’s Rainbow Fund, which was set up in honour of Rosie Mayling, who died aged 11 from a rare blood disease. All proceeds from fund raising go towards helping sick and disabled children at the John Radcliffe Hospital and their families in the Thames Valley area.

The auction will be held at the Wycombe Swan Theatre during a gala evening called Making Magic, a celebration of dance, music and song by a host of West End artistes and supporting cast from Maidenhead-based Redroofs Theatre School, which is owned and run by Rosie’s family and where Lucy was once a pupil.

Lucy has already donated the £10,000 she won on Family Fortunes and the substantial cheque she received for being outright winner of X Factor, the Battle of the Stars, to the charity.

The Show Must Go On

This afternoon pupils of Redroofs Day School were introduced to Mazz Murray star of "We Will Rock You". She has taken the role of Killer Queen for seven consecutive years.

Mazz, a former Redroofs pupil, returned to rehearse with her backing vocalists, a group of Redroofs pupils and students, who she said brought back so many amazing memories of her Redroofs days.

They are singing "The Show Must Go On" at Wycombe Swan Theatre, for an audience of 1000 as part of the Rosies Rainbow Concert entitled Making Magic. Mazz will be singing two songs from "We Will Rock You".

During the session with the school today she spoke about the meaning of the song, and instructed the group on approaching rock music as singers. It was a great afternoon and something of a masterclass in the build up to a highlight in the schools calendar.

Newsletter - Day School 25/2/10

Newsletter – Thurs 25th February

As part of our educational Shakespeare project, the whole Day School will leave Redroofs mid morning on Friday to see Twelfth Night at the National Theatre. The workshop led by the National yesterday was a huge success and thanks to Mrs Martin for arranging this. Tickets have been booked for all pupils for the matinee will be charged to your school account in the normal way. The coach returns at

Final dance exam rehearsals have taken place over the past week and parents of exam candidates have been invited to watch their children demonstrating their ISTD gradework prior to examinations today. Modern teacher Kelly Gibbs has achieved a high standard of technique across the board and all pupils should feel justly confident.

Summer uniform – this is now in stock in the school shop. Pleated skirts – we have a compulsory style of skirt. Random black skirts are not permitted. We have also introduced a black Reedroofs v-neck (compulsory style only to be purchased from the school shop) which replaces the black cardigan and sweatshirt for summer and is designed and fitted to be worn over the polo shirt. New blazers are now in stock in all sizes.

DVD’s – order form attached for HONK orders and PANTO (Red Riding Hood). This is a one-off order opportunity as we can only produce these in bulk.

Please note that there is no Sunday rehearsal for the Day School pupils.

School is running as normal on Monday 8th March. All pupils are required to be in attendance.

We are still receiving feedback about Honk, in particular the smooth and professional way in which the whole school came together as a company. Well done to all those who carried responsibility in featured roles and equally we value the work ethic of many of the ensemble.

Congratulations this week to :

Congratulations to Cara for Oliver, to Zoe Belcher for taking over from Cara with no notice on Honk, to Leo, Ed and Sophie J-B for yesterdays modelling assignment.

Preparations are in full swing for Making Magic which is almost sold out. You may be interested to know that the star cast for the event is now confirmed and includes: Our very own Adam Stafford, Producer of the event, currently on tour with Chicago and transferring as Mr Cellophane to the West End this coming week; Maz and Gina Murray both ex-day school – Mazz now in her 7th year as Killer Queen in We Will Rock You, Gina West End credits too long to mention, Peter Piper, Clare Marlowe (ex day school and RR student and infact here as a supply drama teacher last week, also working with the highly acclaimed Shakespeare for Kids alongside Martin Clark (ex student!), Graham Weaver – Chicago, Jayne O’Mahoney (ex Day School), the original Cosette in Les Mis who went on to become the only adult Cosette to date who has played both roles, Juliette and Sophie Caton (Juliette ex Day School, Sophie ex part timer) , plus cast from Spamalot, Eastenders star Emma Barton and many, many more.

Today Thursday recording is underway in Phantom Studio for a brand new Rosies Rainbow Fund CD which will include the latest Michael Roets and Carolyn collaboration “Make Magic Make Music Make a Song”. The CD will be released for sale at the show next week.

We are delighted to introduce Danielle Heathcote to our rosta of multi-talented vocational teachers. Danielle trained in Musical Theatre at London Studio Centre and had an excellent performing career prior to her move into teaching, directing and producing. Danielle will work with us across Day School and Student departments and has taught some of the Day School this week for Singing technique and Acting/ Improvisation.

Book Week vouchers will go our to all pupils next week.

Mrs Gigg is now collecting Sainsburys vouchers which are available until 8th June. We hope to match last years voucher collection which purchased a cd player and a few smaller items.

We are also collecting Nestle Box Top vouchers which we can use to buy books for the library.

Please also note that you can access Amazon via our website to help us to accrue a commission to spend on books for school.

Please visit the school website from time to time as we are starting to upload video clip.

Oliver

Congratulations to Liam Buckland who will be singing and dancing in Oliver as a Who will Buy boy and Ensemble. Well done Liam – this a fantastic achievement.

School fundraising Mufti and Cake sale

Well done Jonny and indeed the whole school on a very successful first event. Thursday mufti day and cake sale raised over £150.00

Thank you to all of you for baking cakes. We had enough for a two day sale and this was enjoyed by all.

Inherit the Wind

We have tried very hard to coordinate a cost effective trip to support Elizabeth in Inherit the Wind but due to dance examinations and the structure of the way that theatre organise party bookings it has not been possible to make it work. However they will offer group discounts for 8 or more on Sundays Tuesdays and Wednesdays only and the box office number is 0870 060 6628. We very much hope that some of you will be able amongst yourselves to organise your own evening out.

Uniform

All year 11’s must wear school blazers this side of half term  and bomber jackets after half term and must use a school bags.

Deodorants

Roll-ons only please. Aerosols not permitted! Mrs Gigg had a trip to casualty and we never want this to happen again.

Rosie’s Rainbow Choir

Auditions are coming up for this years charity choir tour. We have a very full tour schedule already. Details about the choir and audition date etc will be given out shortly . If you are new to Redroofs please check out the Rosie’s Rainbow website www.rosiesrainbowfund.co.uk for information on our very special registered children’s charity.

Student entry for September 2010

We are already  receiving an extremely high level of applications for next years intake. As we limit our intake it is vital  that any current yr 11’s who are interested in our 2 yr screen acting school with dance and musical theatre option should advise us before half term in order that we can arrange for you to experience a day as a student sometime before Christmas. The student course structure and high expectations make this a realistic option for those seeking an alternative to A levels or theLondon dance colleges which offer intensive dance heavy courses. We are also here to advise as objectively as possible on the best choice of dance colleges.

Redroofs Spirit Warrior

Back to class for Jess!

Spirit Warriors

Drama

Inspired by ancient Chinese legend, Spirit Warriors, created by writer Jo Ho, is an adventure-packed series mixing live-action and martial-arts fantasy with digital technology and computer-generated characters.

A school trip to a museum ignites an epic quest for Bo (Jessica Henwick), her sister Jen (Alicia Lai) and fellow schoolchildren Vicky (Lil Simz), Trix (Gilles Geary) and Martin (Karl Rogers). Transported to a parallel Spirit World, where each possesses a special power, they meet Shen, a Chinese dragon, who guides them as they negotiate the realms of Wood, Water, Earth and Fire to seek out 12 Spirit Pieces before evil warlord Li (Benedict Wong) his henchman Hwang (Tom Wu) and their faceless Nian shadow warriors can capture them. There's just one problem – 21st-century kids don't have much experience of making conversation with an ancient dragon.

In a visual spectacle never before been seen on CBBC, the young heroes meet a mysterious new denizen of the Spirit World each week as they struggle to secure a new Spirit Piece against Hwang. If they succeed they will save the universe and Bo and Jen's ailing mother. If they fail, the Spirit World and the children’s own world will both fall under Li's terrible dominion.

Day School Fundraising Events

A letter from Jonny

25 September 2009

Dear Parents of Day School Pupils

FUNDRAISING EVENTS

You may have read in the recent newsletter that I have been asked to be the School Fundraiser. I have a first target to raise between £400 and £500 for a school computer for use of pupils. This is an exciting project as the computer will benefit all the children of Redroofs.

Please help me by supporting any events you can.

We will be holding a number of events over the year, some involving just children and others involving families and all proceeds will go towards equipment for use by pupils to improve our school environment. The school will also continue to run charity events for chosen charities and Rosies Rainbow Fund in the normal way.

Here are the first two events.  Please support them if you are able:

THURSDAY 1st OCTOBER

Non school uniform day -  pupils can pay £1 for the privilege of not wearing uniform! Cake sale - we will also be having a cake sale at lunch time.  All donations of cakes will be gratefully received.  Please bring them to school in the morning and hand them in at the office. Absolutely no nut ingredients please  Cakes will be priced from 25p to £1.00 and suggested spending money is up to £1.50 although you are welcome to purchase additional cakes to take home if you wish.

FRIDAY 9 OCTOBER 6.00 p.m - 8.30 p.m (time to be confirmed)

Film Friday – we will be having a film night which will be fun for your children.  Siblings welcome to join. We regret that this event is only open to pupils and  brothers and sisters up to 16 years of age. Tickets £5 per person to include a drink and popcorn.  Please return slips and money Friday 2nd October

Yours sincerely

Jonny Stevens

The Buzz 1

Redroofs Day School News

Redroofs Newsletter Autumn Term Week One

Dear Parents,

Firstly may we say how lovely it has been to welcome our dayschoolers back this week. We have thirteen new faces who we hope have enjoyed their first week here. We also welcome two new members of staff - Mr Mark Higgins who will be teaching geography up to GCSE and Mrs Kerri Martin teaching English to GCSE and Shakespeare.

Uniform

All pupils have been issued with a uniform list which includes our new uniform requirements. While we have stated that old style uniform may be worn until summer 2010 we do ask that you purchase girls voile ballet skirts as soon as possible. Also national skirts are compulsory for all pupils and the shop does stock these.

Boys must purchase a dance vest which is worn for all dance classes. Other makes or non logoed vests are not permitted.

Every girl must have a thick hair net immediately and the shop also stocks these. Pupils who do not have one will be issued with these next week and Theatre Dancewear will invoice you.

We ask for your support in ensuring that children bring the correct dance gear to school and that hair is in a neat bun.

Boy’s hair

Fringes must be above the eye brow or clipped back and long hair tied back

Please note that our full uniform is compulsory throughout the day school.

Homework diaries

These will be signed off at school on Mondays. Please may we ask for your co operation and support in all matters pertaining to homework and missed work .

Healthy Eating

Thank you for your noted support with our new food policy. It has been interesting listening to lunch time conversations about the impact of a balanced diet.

The new look Redroofs

It has been such a pleasure to see the reaction of our pupils to our newly decorated spaces. While work continues at the back of the school, classrooms and locker room have been freshly painted and film clapperboards carrying the new names of all our rooms are now in place. Each area has been named after a musical show or character.

Wall of Fame

We are starting a new Wall of Fame on ……..Broadway which you may have heard is the new name given to our through way upstairs. A growing display of pieces and pictures written or typed will display the professional experiences of some of our pupils.

Congratulations

A great start to the school year for Lucy Stanton. If you go to Legoland on Firework night you will hear her voice resounding around the theme park.

She goes into the studio next week and we are sure she will write something about it for our new Wall of Fame.

Elizabeth Carter is currently in rehearsal at the Old Vic under the direction of Trevor Nunn and acting alongside Kevin Spacey and ...a performing monkey.

Zac Middleton is shooting a commercial for Volkswagen and Jenny Huxley Golden is shooting another series of MI high.

Many of our pupils are in auditions and recalls for Oliver and Billy Elliot this week and we wish them all the best.

inherit the wind

When science teacher Bertram Cates violates a state law he finds himself at the centre of a court case that not only shakes the United States but resonates across the world.

Considered one of the great American plays of the twentieth centuryLawrence and Lee’s gripping, relevant drama is inspired by the famous Scopes ’Monkey Trial’. In 1925 school teacher John Scopes stood accused of violating a Tennessee statute by teaching Darwin’s theory of evolution to his students. Two legal Titans confront each other when this close knit community puts freedom of thought on trial.

A film version of the play released in 1960 starring Spencer Tracy and Gene Kelly received four Academy Award nominations. This production marks the 150th Anniversary of the publication of Darwin’s ’The Origin of Species’

’’He that troubleth his own house shall inherit the wind:
and the fool shall be servant to the wise of heart’’

(Proverbs 11:29)

Award-winning Director Trevor Nunn directs an outstanding ensemble cast including Kevin Spacey and David Troughton in this fascinating slice of American history played out in a thrilling courtroom drama.

Trevor Nunn returns to The Old Vic following the success of Richard II starring Kevin Spacey. Aside from his musical credits – which include smash hits such as Cats, Les Misérables and Starlight Express – Trevor Nunn was Artistic Director of the RSC for eighteen years and in 1996 become Artistic Director of the National Theatre. His most recent credits include Hamlet (Old Vic), King Lear and The Seagull (RSC) and A Little Night Music in the West End.

Old Vic Artistic Director Kevin Spacey has appeared in A Moon for the Misbegotten, Richard II and Speed the Plow at The Old Vic.

Elizabeth receives her news....

A lifetime wish ...

Ahh!!!!!! Today I got into 'Inherit the Wind' with Kevin Spacey and David Troughton at The Old Vic.

I am so excited because it's my first West End Show!!!

It's going to be a great experience, also not forgetting it's to be directed by Trevor Nunn.

The story is a remake of a 1920's courtroom drama which was released in 1960 as a film starring Gene Kelly and Spencer Tracy.

I get to play the part of Melinda.

I am so happy.

This is my lifetime wish

Coming soon....

Dear Parents of Day School pupils

I am sure you will be pleased to learn that we are updating our uniform this autumn. While children will obviously have the opportunity to wear out their current uniform we are replacing T-shirts, sweatshirts, and leotards with a new design. The new polo shirts, leotards, and more flattering and very comfortable tracksuits (I can vouch for this as I tried one on!) will be available from the school shop on site. Order forms will be ready for you shortly.

The school shop will also stock shoes and accessories.

Beth Kingston is Hollyoaks' latest soapstar

From Littlewick to Liverpool!!!

Beth Kingston

MEET Hollyoaks newest cast member.

Beth Kingston will take on the role of new female student India after entering the soap’s open auditions.

The 22-year-old Liverpool fan said: “I was really excited to get down to the last 25, never mind the last three.”

Beth, who will make her screen debut in September, was immediately handed her script in preparation to start filming on Friday.

She spent yesterday shopping for her character’s clothes with Hollyoaks’ head of wardrobe.

The history graduate from Bournemouth was among 1,700 wannabes who entered the Desperately Seeking competition.

Hollyoaks series producer, Lucy Allen, said: “Beth has the integrity and naivety we were looking for.”

It will be like nothing ever seen before on Children’s television.”

Watch out for LOTS of Redroofs pupils in this!!!

CBBCs bold new children’s drama series, Bo And The Spirit World, which will be set in a mythical fantasy realm and will draw inspiration from ancient Chinese myths and legends.

Anne says: “Inspired by Yimou Zhang’s House Of Flying Daggers and Ang Lee’s Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon we wanted to bring our CBBC audience the visual spectacle and exciting adventure of an ambitious drama set in Ancient China.

“Viewers will be drawn into a fantastical world with brave and enterprising children taking the lead in an amazing quest. It will be like nothing ever seen before on Children’s television.”

The series, which has been created by up-and-coming writer Jo Ho, will introduce viewers to the character of Bo, a young British Chinese girl, who accompanied by her brother Timothy, gets transported to a magical spirit world.

Armed with super heroic powers the pair must go on a quest with their friends to save not only their own Grandma but the entire universe from their arch enemy Li and his shadow ninjas.

Bo And The Spirit World will use the latest digital technology to create an original and exciting new series for CBBC’s 6-12-year-old audience.

Bo And The Spirit World will be executive produced and directed by Jon East, whose previous CBBC credits include Summerhill and the Children’s Bafta winner That Summer Day.

Speaking about the series Jon says: “Bo And the Spirit World is another first for CBBC drama, a totally new kind of drama that poses some exciting technological and editorial challenges by virtue of its fantasy setting.

“We’re hoping to deliver a series that, besides thrills and laughs, also possesses real heart and a fresh and contemporary feel, drawing from the rich heritage of Chinese culture.”

An eventful trip to Peter Pan

Thank you to all day schoolers for such outstanding behavior on the trip to Peter Pan this week. We had hoped for sunshine...but not a heatwave and certainly hadn't bargained for the 35 minute wait as you witnessed a Tinkerbell with serious rib injuries being lead off stage by men in black... certainly a bit of upstaging going on by the medical team, so we hope you managed to enjoy the spectacular 360 degree projected backdrop and to appreciate the flying and something of the story!

Uniform update

Closure of Dancia, Cippenham Closure of Dancia in Cippenham

Dear Parents and Pupils

We have been quite seriously affected by the sudden and unannounced closure of Dancia International in Cippenham who have been sole suppliers of our dance and musical theatre uniforms for a number of years. Our apologies to parents who have made their way to Caversham to find that stock has not been sent there as we had been informed.  We are currently looking at a more satisfactory arrangement and apologise particularly to new pupils/parents who will be worst affected. In the meantime Mrs Gigg has plenty of 2nd hand stock and we will keep you updated on supplier information as and when we are able to do so.

Watch out for Robin Hood

Jo Froggatt

Joanne Froggatt is to star in the new series of the BBC's big budget version of Robin Hood.

27 year old Jo attended our Day School from the age of 14 and is in regular contact with us has been filming in Hungary.
Her role is a far cry from some of her previous work – last year she appeared at the Old Vic Theatre alongside stage greats such as Diana Rigg, Eleanor Bron and Lesley Manville in the first English language adaption of a Pedro Almodovar film, All About My Mother, in London's West End.
That followed performances as Joanna Lees in the television adaption of the true life murder of Peter Falconio and as Myra Hindley's sister in a TV drama about the moors murders. She also played the role of Danielle Cable, whose fiance Stephen Cameron was murdered in a road-rage incident in 1996, for which she was nominated for a Royal Television Society Award for best female actor.
"This role in Robin Hood is more commerical than a lot of the other work I have done since I left

Coronation Street
."

Jo came to our day school from Whitby at the age of 14 and soon landed her first tv role on The Bill.

Shooting for 11 weeks Jess will be putting into practice many of her new found skills including Stage and Screen Combat and of course screen-acting! The Buzz!

In-house news from Sams perspective!

Dear Day School Parents and Pupils

Firstly a very happy New Year to you all. Most of you will now know that for our families it was given a very special kick start with the birth of Dominic Joseph Orlando Mayling on 29th December! Carolyn, David and Ellie have asked me to pass on their huge thanks for the long string of lovely messages and we look forward to his first visit to the day school very shortly.

Carolyn thanks the choir and all parents, as ever, for their superb work over the festive period. Miss Rose echoes this re the cast of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, but your job isn’t quite over yet!

We hope both Upper and Lower School enjoyed the vocational week with RC Annie Stage Combat which brought new skills to the (new sprung) floor. The feedback was positive and exciting and I felt privileged to witness the impromptu display at the end of the three day workshop. I was simply astounded at the focus you all displayed and how much the classes had achieved in such a short time. It was inspiring and I only wish we’d either captured it on video or invited parents in to see it. It was literally breathtaking.

I am told that this commitment to work continued into the Choreography competition which Carolyn and Miss Rose tell me was quite staggering. It seems we have choreographic talent a-plenty and look forward to watching it develop. Please don’t wait for competitions - we are always happy to see new work, whether choreographic, musical or otherwise, emerging.

With the Novello panto drawing to a close for the 2008-9 season, despite the cold we are now back to business!  Miss Rose congratulates the two teams of dwarfs who have been utterly professional throughout the season.

Already this week we have had several pupils out on a modelling assignment, panto still underway, an outstanding reaction to our boys auditions for Oliver (under 5 footers only!) - better luck next time girls and various castings and audio bookings coming in for next month. We will shortly be looking at possibles for the recasting of Carousel. We can confirm that there are plenty of television briefs coming in too- things have definitely started to pick up again.

Phase One is being well used and has now reached the “I can’t imagine what we did without it” status. We look forward to opening Phase Two - the new multi-purpose studio, next week and know it will be an equally popular working space. Our next phase begins with a new “raised roof” (as though you need any help in raising the roof”) on the existing back studio and then the locker area, followed by a tidy up of the garden.

Our New Years Inset Day was used for First Aid Training and we are pleased to advise was well attended. From an Academic viewpoint we are delighted to see a much more comfortable environment than we had a year ago, as we spread out into our new spaces and our new timetable has bedded in successfully. Mocks are with us and we hope that all pupils will do themselves justice.

We look forward to the school trip to Oliver to see our pupils at work.

Our over 16’s are also extremely busy. The newly structured 2 year course this term includes rehearsals for The Roses of Eyam which they will be performing at the Novello, a programme of Musical excerpts which will be performed in-house, a 35 hour Stage and Screen Combat course (with examination), and 10 weekly screen-acting masterclasses, in addition to a dance timetable and regular drama classes. Our 22 Post Grads begin rehearsals this week on the first of three films which we intend to screen at Bafta (The Merchant of Little Venice directed by director/filmmaker Caroline Sax, Inside Out - a prison drama, which we have commissioned will be directed by Rupert Such, (who has been directing Eastenders for several months) and what I believe is our seventh screen original by Paul Prescott known to many of you as our panto villain, although not this season.

While the timetable is a full and interesting one, there is always room for flexibility and we are hoping to get many of you out on auditions over the coming weeks...watch this space!

latest update

OLIVER! WORKHOUSE CHILDREN

The new production of Oliver! at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane stars Rowan Atkinson as Fagin, Jodie Prenger as Nancy, Burn Gorman as Bill Sikes and a cast and orchestra of over 100 actors and musicians.  Included in this company are 3 teams of 16 children who will perform in the opening number, ‘Food Glorious Food’.

These 3 teams will be required for approximately 6 months at a time, and will be found from within the M25/Home Counties area, starting first in Maidenhead.

The children will be transported by coach at 4.30pm (11.30 on matinees) with chaperones on board the coach.  After their appearance in the show they will board the coach to be returned home by 9pm.

During their time with us they will have the opportunity to receive some training from the Children’s Resident Director and Musical Director

Once some experience is gained, children have the opportunity to audition for other parts in the show.  This could include Fagin’s Gang, other ensemble children or even Dodger or Oliver.

When Oliver! was staged at the London Palladium, a boy was auditioned to join the company and his only experience was singing in the school choir.  He went on to play the part of Oliver in London and on the UK tour and played Gavroche in Les Misérables in London and on tour.

To audition for Oliver! Workhouse Children, you need to be a boy aged 8 – 12.  You do not need to have had experience, you just need to sing in tune and be under 5 foot tall with an unbroken voice.   We also have limited places for girls who must also be under 5 foot tall, undeveloped and good singers.  All children must live within a 5 mile radius of Maidenhead or Windsor town Centre.

All children need to be available from Feb - August 2009.  They play two days a week on a rota.
