HOW OUR SCHOOL RUNS
Redroofs Day School is a co-educational school for pupils aged 10 to 16+. First lesson begins at 8.15. Lessons end at 3pm . The pupils have a half hour lunch break.
After school care facility is available until 4.30 daily
Academically the school works in school year groups as follows:
Lower School
Year 5 and 6 work together as a Junior Class, Year 7, Year 8
Upper School
Year 9, Year 10, Year 11
The school will from time to time and in agreement with parents move children into classes outside their year group in order to accelerate learning, to create a slower paced academic experience or to allow for a pupil to attend a particular vocational class that he/she requires. All timetables are individual to the pupil and the school will always work in line with what works best for the particular childs needs.
The Lower School spend their morning in academic classes. For Juniors our academic class is run by Mrs Pauline Petre who creates a varied and stimulating academic experience timetabled to include a broad Junior School learning experience. English, History, Geography, PHSE, Literature are all taught in the classroom. Specialist teachers work with these children for Mathematics, Art and French. The Junior class will work at the pace of the children within it, and we aim to provide a solid foundation on which to build in future years.
Children joining Redroofs at Junior level will come from a variety of backgrounds with wide ranging learning experiences.
Years 7 and 8, like the Upper School are taught by specialist teachers. Academic curriculum includes:
English, English Literature, Mathematics, French, History, General Science (non laboratory based), Art, Geography, and of course Drama.
Redroofs does not offer Sport or P.E .
Academic lessons use traditional teaching methods and are from time to time supported by school trips. There is limited use of ICT in the lower school.
The second half of the day is spent in Vocational classes. These include :
Ballet, Tap, Modern Theatre Dance, Jazz Dance, Singing lessons(group), Musical Theatre , Script Workshop, Creative Drama (Improvisation skills), Audition Workshops and Text Study.
Vocational classes are all taught by specialists. All dance teachers are qualified teachers endorsed by ISTD (Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing) or RAD (Royal Academy of Dance) ..
Vocational classes are split according to level. Dance classes are predominantly graded. Children attend a minimum of one and a maximum of 5 ballet classes within their own individual timetable.
Vocational timetables are regularly reviewed to ensure that every child makes appropriate progress.
The timetable on Friday is different to the rest of the week. Academic classes remain constant and pupils attend a full afternoon of Musical Workshop. This class works towards performance and aims to draw together all areas of study to provide a performance outlet. A performance results from this work, and may be studio or full scale theatre based, usually the latter.
For one week each term academic work stops to give way to either rehearsals or specialist classes. Recent Vocational weeks have included theatre trips with associated masterclasses, ex Redroofs pupils currently working in West End shows running Workshops in current numbers from the big shows, choreography competition work and Stage Combat workshops with qualified fight directors. Vocational weeks are always geared towards providing a new challenge and are often the time when new talents emerge.
Upper School
The Upper School runs in the same way as Years 7 and 8 except that the Academic classes run in the afternoon and Vocational classes in the morning.
The Upper School, in particular Years 10 and 11 are encouraged to use laptops to support their GCSE coursework.
Homework (both Upper and Lower School)
All pupils are expected to produce homework in order to support classroom study. This may be to prepare for, or to reinforce, learning.
In cases where homework is not presented, and in particular where pupils continually fail to put in the time at home, the pupil will be removed from Vocational class for private study.
Missed Work
The school has a Missed Work policy to meet the needs of children participating in professional work or auditions. It should also be referred to in cases of sickness or other absence.
Expectations
We recognise the individual needs of each pupil and will tailor a timetable to meet their aspirations but not to the exclusion of their general development. Pupils do not choose their timetable but the staff will ensure that they are given a timetable allowing them to develop appropriately All pupils are expected to work at their highest level and to contribute positively across the curriculum. The school does not offer SEN provision. Children may be required to maintain academic support outside of school and we encourage communication links with individual tutors.
Assessment and Examinations
All pupils sit annual examinations and developmental tests.
Dance examinations are scheduled as appropriate.
GCSE examinations are taken in Year 11 by all pupils (see examination policy)
